We’ll be talking about public relations and publicity in class Wednesday. This article from the New York Times is a good example of a company creatively gaining some positive publicity.

Remember that little survey tool we used in the first class? Survey Monkey is a real business. They will have $45 million in revenue this year, with margins as high as 85%, according to Techcrunch. Now they have first rate venture funding, and top talent from Google, Ticketmaster, and Netscape. Not bad for just monkeying around.

It is a visualisation of over 700 posts to the blog, which lets you browse by keyword and association. Fair warning - you’re likely to waste of time here being gobsmacked by all the great information presented.

Thu, 03 Sep 2009 04:05:23 -0700 Another great McKinsey visualization: adoption rates for web technologies http://mkt571.lawrencelinn.com/another-great-mckinsey-visualization-adoption-0 http://mkt571.lawrencelinn.com/another-great-mckinsey-visualization-adoption-0
McKinsey this week released another great visualization, this time summarizing results from their annual technology survey of 1700+ companies. If you want to know how fast ‘real' companies (the kind that hire McKinsey) are adopting web 2.0 technologies like Twitter, Facebook, etc. this is the place to find out.

Wed, 02 Sep 2009 00:33:01 -0700 left brain / right brain - how does advertising work? http://mkt571.lawrencelinn.com/left-brain-right-brain-how-does-advertising-w http://mkt571.lawrencelinn.com/left-brain-right-brain-how-does-advertising-w
We talk a lot in class about how marketers are always switching between analytical and creative thought. The two articles demonstrate that exercise with respect to evaluation of advertising. The first article (free ebook actually), from the Ad Contrarian, gives a mix of the soft and hard logic behind advertising and branding.  The second, a research paper from Carnegie Mellon, presents a very rigorous analysis of how advertising and branding can shift the price demand curve. You need to absorb both to be a good marketer. Figure out why you’re advertising (shift the demand curve) and then determine how to do the advertising (get creative).

This is Microsoft's vision for retailing (back in 2004 anyhow). A fascinating look at the store of the future. There are a whole host of these videos on the Microsoft Labs site very much worth viewing.

One of the SR features almost all new users seem to have trouble with is sharing their presentations, so I put together a short screencast to show you how you can publish your presentation so that people outside your company/account can see it.

McKinsey also did some recent work re-thinking the consumer decision process. Worth looking at, although I'm not sure it is quite developed enough yet to replace the funnel concept.

While not developed explicitly for evaluating foreign markets (it was initially developed for evaluating business units), the McKinsey matrix can be adapted to use as a market entry model. http://bit.ly/P7rBM

Thu, 20 Aug 2009 08:42:00 -0700 getting started with sliderocket http://mkt571.lawrencelinn.com/getting-started-with-sliderocket http://mkt571.lawrencelinn.com/getting-started-with-sliderocket
Professional-authoring

If you choose to do a presentation for your week 4 group assignment, here are some tips to get you started with Sliderocket.

  • Introduction videoThis will give you a good short overview about SR.
  • Free trial signup. Sliderocket is free for personal use, but to access all the 'gee-whiz' features, especially collaboration tools, You can signup for a 30-day free trial of a full business account here.
  • Collaboration. This is important. To get the full collaboration functionality of SR you need to have just one account for each team. One person can signup for a trial account, then within that account give additional usernames and passwords to the rest of their team.  If every team member signs up for their own personal account collaboration on a presentation is a lot harder. (it's a subtle distinction, but tripped up a lot of folks in my last class. If you have questions about this email me)
  • Training. Sliderocket runs a free 45 minute online seminar every Wednesday. If you're still a little unsure of how the whole thing works and how to get started this is a good place to get help.
  • Presentation hints. You should see a link below to a presentation I put together a few months ago about presentation tips. Not all will be relevant to this assignment, but they will be to your week 6 final presentation.
